Title: The Significance of Choosing and Using Data Types

Description:

It’s an all too common occurrence to have table columns or variables that have been assigned less than ideal data types. My goal in this presentation is to show you the importance of choosing the proper data type; show you some guidelines in determining what an appropriate data type would be; and once chosen, give you some tools for its usage and management. I will demonstrate several performance and accuracy issues, along with their possible solutions, caused by either the assignment of inappropriate data types or improper usage of them. In addition I will cover several data type related functions, and point out caveats in their usage.

July Meeting

Salem Oregon SQL Server User Group (SOSSUG) Reminder… Tomorrow!!! July 18th 2012 at 5:30 PM. Speaker: Jeremiah Peschka presents A Developer's Guide to Fixing Dangerous Queries. SQL Server does a good job of working with whatever garbage we throw at it, but sometimes a helping hand is needed to smooth things out. You may have meant well when you wrote that sloppy SQL, but that predicate lurking under the surface is poisoning your performance. This session will expose your worst habits, anti-patterns, and bad practices. By the time we're done, your T-SQL will be on the path to making things right again. This talk will be therapeutic for anyone from a junior DBA to a senior developer. Tuning these awful queries doesn't have to be a black art - SQL Server provides you with all the information you need to understand what a query is doing. In this session we'll walk through execution plan basics and other built-in tools to make tuning queries easier. Biography: Jeremiah Peschka @peschkaj helps developers, DBAs, and engineers build faster, robust, and scalable solutions; Microsoft SQL Server is frequently a part of that solution, but other databases are also. He has worked as a database and emerging technology expert at Quest Software researching new trends and technologies around data storage. Before that Jeremiah worked across many industries as a system administrator, developer, and DBA, and has been involved in all aspects of application development and deployment. June Meeting

Good Afternoon Everyone, Our featured Speaker for our June, 20th meeting is Kendra Little. Demystifying Benchmarking: How to Measure SQL Server Performance Ever wanted to measure how much work a given SQL Server instance can do? Benchmarks allow you to measure and compare base performance between instances. In this session, Kendra Little will introduce you to a free benchmarking tool and demonstrate how to run a TPC-C benchmark against SQL Server. Kendra will provide a quick-start guide to get you going fast, and show you how to use benchmarking data to justify big changes in your environment. Bio: Kendra Little is all about data, communication, and creativity. Kendra nerds out on SQL Server full time as a founder of Brent Ozar PLF, LLC, a boutique consulting company. She is a Microsoft Certified Master in SQL Server 2008 and a Microsoft MVP. Topic: Rules Rules Rules

Computers are governed by the rules of physics: electrons, drive
heads, and disk platters can only move so fast. Understanding how
these rules operate and interact leads to insights into application performance.
Understanding why something might perform a certain way makes it much
easier to understand the tradeoffs of a specific design.
Database systems are built according to those rules: memory is faster
than disk which is faster than the network. Database schemas and
queries are built within the rules of database systems. You will hit
the limitations of these rules. If you know what the rules are and why
they are in place, you'll know when it's time to break them... and how
to succeed.
